International Design Award 2002
This year, the Baden-Württemberg International Design Award again increased in status: 226 designers and companies from all around the world submitted 430 products – a clear indicator of the great interest in this competition, which attracted almost 30 percent more entrants than in the prior year. The judges selected 75 products as being worthy of the “Baden-Württemberg International Design Award in Silver”. Because of the high standard of the products submitted, “Baden-Württemberg International Design Award in Gold”, the much sought-after Baden-Württemberg International Design Award 2002, was awarded eight times – a new record.
According to Henning Horn, head of the Design Center Stuttgart: “Apart from its unique theme, the attractiveness of the competition comes from its non-commercial, reputable character, which provides an additional incentive to compete”. Inexpensive competition fees also allow small and medium-sized enterprises the opportunity to compete with the best international designs, and if their product is selected for an award, to pave the way for the market success of their product. All the judges’ own products are excluded from the competition. This year, for the first time, one product was retroactively excluded from the competition, because it was too closely linked to the judges.
The members of the panel of judges were:
Prof. Birgit Mager, Service Design, Cologne College of Commerce and Industry
Prof. Hans-Jerg Maier-Aichen, Karlsruhe Design College
Fritz Frenkler, fp-design
Barbara Schmidt, Kahlaporzellan
Wim Ouboter, Micro Mobility Systems
They unanimously awarded the following eight products the “Baden-Württemberg International Design Award in Gold 2002″:

This baby’s feeding spoon has been well thought through, and combines good design with a high level of functionality and safety. The soft, supple bowl of the spoon is suitable for the most sensitive gums, while the spoon’s long shaft makes it easy to scrape the kind of jars used for baby food empty. Its excellent finishing also prompted the judges to give it an award. What pleased the judges most, however, was the way it cares about babies: “Here, someone has thought about the needs of those who cannot yet express what they want”.

This riding cap does more than justice to every safety and comfort requirement, and is just as suitable for tournaments as for the amateur rider. Its striking design elements are its highly efficient ventilation system and practical system for adjusting to different head shapes. Its slim styling, innovative mixture of matt and glossy plastic and concomitant allegory of the classical velvet material usually used prompted the judges to give it an award.

The light, transparent feel of this lounge chair stems above all from the one-piece, knitted webbing covering the sculptural framework of the back rest. The seat is supported by an equally filigree, four-legged swivel frame. The judges were impressed by the chair’s design. As its component parts are very simple, its appearance is one of minimalism and timelessness: the judges spoke of it as the “first transparent upholstered chair, archetypical in form”.

The characteristic form of “Soon” is the result of adding together vertebra-like members. These form the arm of the lamp, and snake their way from base to top. As they can be twisted and turned into any shape, constantly new variants are possible. Interestingly, the translucent plastic used makes the inner workings of the lamp visible. The judges praised the designer’s courage to go for a truly innovative solution. Put into practice with a lot of attention to technical detail, the result is a highly unique design.

True to the tenets of emotional functionalism, this magazine rack unites modern design and a high level of utility. For this reason, it will be equally welcomed in the public sphere of office premises and in the home. With its silver-grey aluminium sections and semi-transparent polypropylene pockets – arranged in a clever, practical way – the product’s design is formally fascinating. What impressed the judges was “Redondo’s” simple design, and it was praised as an extremely aesthetic, pleasing product with an air of lightness and grace.

This digital, communication-capable system controls any heating system, from the individual flat to large-scale heating systems. Its extremely ergonomic control elements, clear display and pictograms used on the individual buttons are user-friendly and easy to understand. In addition, “Vitotronic 300″ has various levels of operation, and in this way the requirements of both end-users and heating engineer are satisfied, as it were. “Design is finding its way into the last corners of the home”, was the judges’ comment.
